Overview
Learning outcomes
Students will:
• Be familiar with the position and status of adult education as part of the Finnish education system, especially the significance of non-formal education in Finnish society.
• Be conversant with the tradition of non-formal education and the different forms of the manifestation of active citizenship in Finland and abroad.
• Be familiar with operations of institutions offering active citizenship and non-formal education.
• Understand how active citizenship and non-formal education contribute to sustainable development.
Contents
1) Introduction to Finnish adult education, non-formal education and the concept of active citizenship.
2) The role of active citizenship and non-formal education in promoting sustainable development.
3) Different implementations of active citizenship.
Study methods
Seminars 60h; flipped learning 20h; visits to organizations 6h; essay 20h; independent work 29h.
Teaching methods
Alternative 1: Flipped classroom The course is divided into five modules. Students are assigned with preliminary module-related learning tasks to work in groups, which are then discussed in the seminar after an introduction to the module.

English as a Medium of Instruction EMI: In this course English is the language of teaching and tuition. Students are provided with support for using English during the course. Students of the Finnish study program can submit their written assignments in Finnish.
NB! Course is organized in Joensuu, Finland. Remote/online participation is not possible.
PARTICIPANT FEES IN 2025
-Participant, normal fee: 550 euros for 2-week-course, 350 euros for 1-week-course.
-Participant from a UEF partner university: 450 euros for 2-week-course, 300 euros for 1-week-course.
-Incoming UEF exchange student: 250 euros for 2-week-course, 250 euros for 1-week-course.
